Mischa Barton was placed under involuntary psychiatric hold on July 16, 2009. The actress was in her home at around 3:00pm when authorities were called by someone in the home due to Barton’s unstable mental state and were asked to help her with a “medical issue.” According to Access Hollywood sources say that Barton was held under what is called a 5150 in the police code, which means that a person is unwell, usually because of a mental condition, and can be held by police involuntarily for up to seventy-two hours if they are considered a danger to themselves or others.
Barton recently starred in the film “Homecoming” which had its international debut yesterday as well. Did Barton crack under the pressure of how she would be received? Was drug use involved? It is too early to answer these questions. Morgan J. Freeman, the director, of “Homecoming” said that Barton’s performance in the film was “fantastic.” However, because of the 5150 involuntary psychiatric hold, Barton was not able to attend her premier.
After Barton was taken into custody by police she was transferred to Cedar-Sinai Medical under the Medical Centerions Code. Interestingly, this is the same code that was used against Brittany Spears when she was held involuntarily during her spell of extremely bizarre behavior which included attacking a car with an umbrella and shaving her head. Hopefully, Ms. Barton will not be attempting anything as drastic.
Mischa Barton got her start in various television shows and rose to fame on the television show “The O.C.” She has been starring in films ever sense the show ended. According to TMZ, while Barton has not shown signs of mental illness in the past she was arrested in 2007 and criminal charges were field against her that included DUI (Driving under the Influence), possession of narcotics and driving with a suspended license.
Barton has steered clear of trouble since the arrest and it is currently unclear whether or not she was under the influence of drugs or alcohol when place under the involuntary psychiatric hold yesterday. The only moderately similar incident in which she was involved was when she was rushed to the hospital in 2007 after mixing prescription medication and alcohol while attending a friend’s barbeque. This is a combination which can make a person extremely ill. However, Barton was taking the medication for a bout of bronchitis and not recreationally. Currently, Barton does not have any knows criminal charges filed against her for this latest incident.
