Michael Phelps Michael Phelps, the world’s greatest swimmer has had a spot of bother again, getting into a car crash in Baltimore, Maryland on Thursday evening. He was unhurt, but the driver of the vehicle he collided with was taken to the hospital.

Phelps was interviewed by Baltimore police after the incident and according to them alcohol does not seem to have been a factor in the crash and the two passengers riding in the Cadillac Escalade also left the scene unharmed.

The intersection where the collision occurs does have a traffic light but police have yet to comment about whom, if anyone may have been at fault. The SUV that belongs to Phelps was towed away with apparent damage to the hood. The other driver’s vehicle, a grey Honda Accord had serious damage to the front drivers’ side, which would suggest that Phelps ran his vehicle into the smaller car.

In 2004 the Olympic gold medalist received eighteen months  probation after he plead guilty to drive while impaired just after he won six gold and two bronze medals at the 2004 Olympics in Athens. In that incident a Maryland state police man pulled him over after he ran a stop sign.

More recently, Phelps was embroiled in controversy after a British tabloid newspaper, the News of the World, published photographs of the swimmer using a marijuana pipe. That incident earned him a three month suspension handed down by the USA swimming authorities. Criminal charges were not pressed because Richland, South Carolina prosecutors found insufficient evidence to do so.

For his part Phelps apologized for the indiscretion saying at the time “I engaged in behavior which was regrettable and demonstrated bad judgment, “I’m 23 years old and despite the successes I’ve had in the pool, I acted in a youthful and inappropriate way, not in a manner people have come to expect from me. For this, I am sorry. I promise my fans and the public it will not happen again.”

He has since returned to swimming, winning five gold medals and one silver medal at the World Swimming Championships earlier this month.

According to Michael Phelps’ swim Coach John Cadigan he is not due back to practice until next week and he had yet to speak with Phelps himself about the car crash.

There have been no updates about the condition of the driver of the other vehicle, an unnamed woman. She was described as “shaken up” by the police on the scene.
