Eighteen years had gone by since 11 year old Jaycee Lee Dugard was kidnapped while on her way to school in South Lake Tahoe, California. Her stepfather Carl Probyn has long told police that he watched helplessly as she was bundled into a car and driven away. Over the years he had to fight with the suspicion that he may have been involved, but what must seem like a miracle has occurred for Carl and his now estranged wife Terry, Jaycee’s mother. After 18 years, their daughter walked into a parole office 160 miles away, accompanied by the man who took her away from her home in 1991.

Jaycee Lee is now 29 years old and has two children of her own, both it appears fathered by her captor Phillip Garrido. Garrido is convicted sex offender and has now been arrested, along with his wife Nancy, in connection with the 18 year old crime, to which he has confessed.

Garrido is described as something of a religious zealot who maintained an online blog in which he claimed, amongst other things, to be able to control sound with his mind. It was when he was attempting to distribute religious literature on the campus of Berkley University without permission   that led police to conduct a background check on the man. Discovering that he was a registered sex offender, they contacted his parole officer who called Garrido in for a meeting. He showed up at the office with his wife, two young girls and a woman he introduced as Alissa – who turned out to be Jaycee.

According to police Jaycee and her daughters lived in isolation in a backyard shed that was hidden from view by a number of trees and bushes. People who had been neighbors of the Garridos for years say they had no idea that either Jaycee or her daughters existed. It is that Duggard’s daughters are 11 and 15 but have never attended any kind of formal school.

Jaycee was reunited with her family on Thursday evening. According to her stepfather “I gave up hope for 18 years, just went into recovery mode “Now, I just won the lotto. It’s just unbelievable”. He learned of Jaycee’s return when his estranged wife called him soon after FBI agents contacted her about her daughter’s reappearance. “She said, ‘They found Jaycee. She’s alive,’” recounted Carl “We cried for about two minutes.”

In an interview from his jail cell with local reporters Philip Garrido asked that people reserve their judgment about him until the “full story “came out. “What’s kept me busy the last several years is I’ve completely turned my life around,” he told KCRA3 reporters via telephone “And you’re going to find the most powerful story coming from the witness, the victim – you wait. If you take this a step at a time, you’re going to fall over backwards and in the end, you’re going to find the most powerful heartwarming story.”
