And he’s back – again. After once again announcing his retirement after a season with the New York Jets last year legendary NFL quarterback Brett Favre has changed his mind about retirement from the game for the second straight summer and signed a contract to play for the Minnesota Vikings for the 2009 – 2010 season.
Ironically the 39 year old, who still holds every major NFL passing record, will be playing for the team who are the arch rivals of the Green Bay Packers, the team he led for sixteen years.
Speaking at a packed press conference on Tuesday evening Farve insisted he was coming back simply for the love of the game. “I think the guys will know that I’m in it for the right reasons, and that’s because I still love to play,” he said. When asked if the chance to beat the Packers had anything to do with his signing for the Vikings Farve said “This is not about revenge or anything like that. Believe me. You can’t take away the 16 years I had in Green Bay. It was unbelievable. It was great, and that will be forever cherished by me and the guys I played with. They’ve moved on. I’ve moved on. I think it’s great for football.”
As is usual with Farve his introduction to his new fans was a veritable media circus. He was flown into town on a private plane that belongs to Vikings owner Zygi Wilf, where hundreds of football mad fans were already waiting in the streets to greet him.
A few weeks ago both Wilf and Vikings coach Brad Childress had faced the fact that their best efforts were not going to bring Farve out of retirement and into a purple uniform. But still, the persistent Childress made one last phone call on Monday and that apparently set Brett thinking again. “Through this whole process after I said ‘no’ three weeks ago, at times I was OK with it,” Favre said. “Other times I said, ‘Boy, you know, I feel like I could help that team.’ I think that’s the competitive fire in me.”
There was no official comment about how much it may have cost to get Brett Favre back into the game, but anonymous sources cited by ESPN on Tuesday put the cost at about $12 million for the season with a $13 million option for next season.
